Sex News: Schools to Teach ‘Loving Sex’

More than four fifths of parents of school-age children (83%) think schools should teach young people about the emotional aspects of sex and relationships as well as the biological facts, according to a survey published today.

The study commissioned by the Sex Education Forum also found that 77% of parents think schools should be required to provide comprehensive sex and relationships education as part of the national curriculum.

The findings support a call from the organisation for personal, social and health education (PSHE) – which includes sex and relationships – to be compulsory.

Although under current legislation schools have to teach the biological aspects of sex, there is no statutory requirement to provide PSHE, which typically includes learning about relationships and the emotional aspects of sex, as well as life skills such as decision making, managing peer pressure and understanding risky behaviour.

“There is a clear groundswell of support for making PSHE compulsory within schools,” said Anna Martinez, co-ordinator of the Sex Education Forum.

Meanwhile ChildLine, the 24 hour children’s helpline run by the NSPCC, also called for better sex and relationships education, as it highlighted how children calling the helpline feel pressure to have sex at an early age, but lack knowledge about sexual health, staying safe and contraception.

Analysis of more than 5,800 calls to the 24-hour helpline highlighted a lack of awareness among young people, with ignorance and embarrassment about sex putting the health and well-being of young people at risk.

Children as young as 12 tell ChildLine they are turning to alcohol to cope with the embarrassment of their first sexual experiences, and the confusion surrounding contraception means risks such as sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy are barely considered.

ChildLine said it was calling on the Government to review PSHE, including learning about sexuality, relationships, safe sex and pregnancy, and to make this a statutory requirement in England.

GfK NOP carried out the survey between February 9 and March 28. Some 1,307 parents of youngsters up to 16 were interviewed.

Religious conservatives find pornography abhorrent — but why? What is it about the depiction of sex acts that would cause it to be the target of so much vitriol? Perhaps because pornography is a threat to their position that sex must only exist for the sake of procreation. In With Pleasure: Thoughts on the Nature of Human Sexuality, Paul R. Abramson and Steven D. Pinkerton write: The significance of pornography is fairly obvious: Pornography is a powerful and effective vehicle for graphically portraying the idea that sex is pleasurable and for extolling sexual diversity. Maybe it isn’t realistic, but the message — that sex is fun, malleable, and pleasurable — is one with which we are all quite familiar … If pornography is largely the conveyance of the idea that sex is pleasurable, why is it so threatening? It is threatening because it challenges conventional morality in a particularly provocative way. It describes or portrays people enjoying sex — usually nonprocreative sex — void of guilt and shame. The effect is especially dramatic when the moral constraints of genital modesty and heterosexual monogamy are challenged. Multiple-partnered sex, homosexual sex, anal sex, interracial sex, and so forth are graphically conveyed in a palatable and pleasing manner. This, in and of itself, is blasphemy in some quarters. Furthermore, the more graphic and real it appears and the more the participants seem to enjoy themselves, the more challenging it is to conventional morality. Thus it would appear that pornography is a type of immediate — and of course very visual — refutation of the “sex is for procreation” ideology. It can’t depict anything like “God approves of non-procreative sex,” but it does show just how much fun and pleasurable that non-procreative sex can be and that’s quite a lot. The drive for pleasure, the drive for sex, and the drive to have pleasure while engaging in sex are very powerful. It isn’t easy to convince people to refrain from non-procreative sex, and even then to only engage in sex within the confines of marriage. Few of those who are taught this appear to truly accept it. Pornography, depicting all kinds of sex being enjoyed without apparent guilt or shame, may be just enough to motivate people to seriously consider that what they have been taught is wrong. They only need to try a bit of the sort of sex they view in order to experience what they see people enjoying — and experience that what they have been taught may not be entirely true after all.
